ABOUT ME
My name is Mai. T. Nguyen-Vo. I was born and raised in California. I moved to New York because my husband was pursuing a PhD at Cornell University. I enjoy the Tompkins County area for its natural beauty and commitment in preserving history and community. I have a five-year old daughter and 2 year-old son who are my inspirations for teaching other children. As much opportunities, hopes, and aspirations that I have for my own children, I hope to provide that for all my students as well. Our family is in the process of relocating to Hawaii and ecstatic for new opportunities there.
I currently hold a NYS Initial Teachers License and will be qualified for my Professional Certification at the end of June 2020. I graduated at SUNY CORTLAND and hold a Master of Science in Teaching in Elementary Childhood (Grades 1-6) degree. Prior to graduate school, I worked as a family liaison at a local elementary school in Ithaca, NY. Over the course of more than three years, I worked as an English language teacher in California and Vietnam, teaching to young children, adolescents, and college-aged adults.
My family fled from war-torn Vietnam, and it is one of my personal aspirations to provide the many unfortunate children in Vietnam a better educational experience. Upon knowing that many children living in the upper regions of northern Vietnam having to miss months of school because of the harsh winter weather, my husband and I have created Tam Viet Project, named after our daughter, Viet-Tam. We aim to raise yearly funds to purchase basic necessities such as winter jackets, shirts, supplies, and the likes to assist the school children.
